READING: PSALM 112:1-8 TEXT: v6 WORDS/LORD ARE PURE WORDS
The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

A contrast is drawn/Psalm between the words/men and words/God
Words of men are: vain (v2) even with their own neighbours
Flattering words (v2) giving false confidence/ulterior motives (v2)
Proud words (v3) God defying words (v4-5)
No wonder James said/tongue: "It is set on fire of hell" (3:6)

By contrast, the words/Lord are pure words
No vanity/deceit etc., here.
This most wholesome thought will occupy us now. 3 points:

1) WHY ARE THE WORDS OF THE LORD ARE PURE WORDS
Here is a three fold cord which is not easily broken:

A) Words/Lord are pure because their Author is pure
Jehovah Himself is without any sin
Not only does not sin…but cannot sin.
Nothing in His nature that can engage sin: James 1:13
Plenty in our nature that can engage sin: James 1:14
We are a tinderbox…just waiting the least spark and therefore we must take every precaution to avoid trouble
Not so Almighty God
He can drag Satan into His presence and not be endangered (Job 1/2 also Matthew 4)
We must flee youthful lusts etc., and put much distance etc.,
All that God does is pure
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. (Deut 32:2)
If this was not so, then the Lord's words would not be pure
From the abundance/his heart an imperfect God would speak
We would detect things that would have been better left unsaid
We would dismiss some things as being the result of vain thinking and where would be then?
The purity/author ensures the purity of His great work

B) Their subject matter is pure:
[i] NEGATIVELY:
They expose sin in all its various forms
Every single way of communication is employed
Verbal warnings/sad examples/prophetic insights
No man can go to the Bible for an excuse to sin
No weak links/Bible or loopholes

[ii] POSITIVELY:
Elevate a holy God and esp. His holy Son
Identify and name holy matters
Relate the benefits of engaging in these things
Happy examples of men like those in Hebrews 11 who so ordered their lives to be beacons of holiness
Relate the joys/heaven…eternity in a totally sin free environment

C) Their object is pure:
Bible is not a merely information book. A mere dictionary/sorts
Bible exhorts us to holiness/purity
The Lord Jesus prayed to this end: John 17:17
Warns of merely reading and not carrying through its commands:
James 1:24/Matthew 7:24-27
The object/Bible is happily realised in many cases
In the Bible itself: Psalm 119:9/11
In the whole history/church
Today…there are professing believers eminent for their piety
The word/Lord is a pure word

2) ADDITIONAL PROOF: THE WORDS/LORD ARE PURE WORDS:

A/ Not merely because the Bible itself says so (although for many/us that is enough) but for additional reasons which will leave the gainsayers without any excuse

B/ Text itself declares: That the Book is so pure as to be likened unto silver which has been tried 7 times/furnace
Not that there was ever any dross…but if there had been…it would have been burnt off in the intense heat/crucible

C/ Therefore Peter could say that they had not followed after cunningly devised fables (2 Peter 1:16)
It can knock the vain traditions/men without any fear that an examination would expose it to similar condemnation

D/ This must make the Book to be beyond price
Pure silver.  Elsewhere it is likened to fine gold (Psalm 19:10/119:127) Treasure/great worth etc.,
That would not be if this book wasn't pure

E/ Might think also, as proof, of the hatred which wicked men have towards this Book. Why do they hate it so?
Because it condemns their sin in clear unequivocal language
At first they merely walked away from Christ (John 6:66-70) complaining about His words…then they silenced Him at Calvary
Then they sought to destroy His church which He formed, esp. charging His people not to preach again i.e. silence the Book

History/this wicked world is one of banning the Bible
History/this wicked world is one of silencing the preachers by one means/another
Why would this be if the Book gave any excuse to sin?
Isn't it strange too that even when men misread and misinterpret the Bible i.e. making the sins/saints as an excuse, they still want to denigrate it and decline it a toleration?

F/ Book has been through the furnace in many different ways
Always survived because its words are pure
Many evangelical churches shedding the purity/Bible's message to accommodate the world.
Why? Ans:- "Survival mate! "

Let me make a prediction. 100 years from now (if Jesus tarries) there will still be groups/people gathering together to study and to live out the unacceptable with the world parts/this Book.
Any church ditching this Book and its message of nonconformity with the world cuts its own throat.
It won't survive as a church Glory will depart, whatever else you are left with

3) OUR DUTIES TOWARDS THESE PURE WORDS/LORD:
Obviously words like these have application for is all

A/ Ever seek to be acquainted with them
Study and mediate upon them and learn more about them
They have no value to us if they lie concealed in the Book
We talk about the glory of an "open Bible"

B/ Seek to live these words out in our daily everyday lives
Here is the real advantage
What use is silver, even of the purest stuff, unless it is used?
What use is the Bible unless you are prepared to live it out?
What advantage lies in knowing what to do. but not doing it/
Of saying: No…but I will conform to this present evil world…"
Don't have to formally say so to do so…but your life says it all

C/ See that their principles are understood and lived out by all those we have authority over
I am reminded that the keeping holy/Sabbath Day was to extend beyond the Israelite's own person and to all within his gates
Without being tyrannical…the principles/Bible are to be brought into play wherever we are and wherever we can

D/ We are to seek to introduce others to them
Where we cannot impose, we can heartily recommend/persuade
Wonderful example of the success of this in Zechariah 8:23
Thus saith the LORD/hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

E/ We are to assist our good causes who are dedicated to the spread of this world. Trinitarian Bible Society comes to mind.
Missionary societies/Boards etc.,
Make use of the ease and small expense of desktop publishing
Tracts/booklets/NT's/Bibles can all be given away etc.,

Holding them back casts a shadow of unwarranted doubt upon these words that God so enthusiastically stands over
