Dear Sir,
Brass Neck Award of the Year (so far) must go to the Irish Catholic Newspaper for running an article on "Protestant Bigotry" (12th
July) on the very week that Pope Benedict XVI pontificated that
Reformed Churches are not true Christian churches. It seems that when
Protestants expound and defend their faith or expose the perceived
errors of others, then they are denounced as "bigots" and "anti Catholics" while the Pope and his subordinates can do the same and be hailed as great defenders of the faith.
You don't need to be a genius to see through it. Twelfth of July or not!
Yours sincerely,
Colin Maxwell (Cork Free Presbyterian Church)

The Examiner,
Cork,

Dear Sir,
I must express surprise to read that my good friend, Micheál Ó Fearghail, says that "The Catholic Church, however, has never taught that the Pope is the head of the church." (Letters Page 23-7-07) The somewhat definitive "Catholic Encyclopaedia" continually asserts that Rome does, with its first heading under the subject of "Pope" reading: "Institution of a Supreme Head by Christ" and continuing: "The
proof that Christ constituted St. Peter head of His Church is found in
the two famous Petrine texts, Matthew 16:17-19, and John 21:15-17" This
Encyclopaedia, which carries the Imprimatur of the Roman Church,
proceeds to quote from authoritative church documents and then alleges
that "the Supreme Headship" is also conferred on what it calls "Peter's Successors."
As
a Bible believing Christian, I must reject the idea that Peter was ever
the Head of the church. The only Head of the Church is Jesus Christ - "He is the head of the body, the church…" (Colossians 1:18)
Yours faithfully,
Colin Maxwell (Cork Free Presbyterian Church)
