LETTER SENT TO: IRISH EXAMINER
SUBJECT: FALLOUT FROM MEL GIBSON'S "THE PASSION"
DATE SENT: UNRECORDED

Dear Sir,

The Jews have every right to feel somewhat aggrieved because they alone have often been held responsible for the death of Jesus Christ.

Jewish exasperation that they are being blamed again for the crucifixion of the Son of God needs to be put into perspective. On one hand, his own countrymen did cry "Crucify Him" (Mark 15:13) and even "His blood be on us and on our children" (Matthew 27:25) This is something which can never be denied and it is not anti Semitism to record these facts. However it does need to be said that we Gentiles were just as guilty. The Bible also records "For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. (Acts 4:27-28)

While both Jew and Gentile have sinned alike in this matter, the important thing is to remember that the Messiah was crucified to make atonement for the sins of His people, both Jew and Gentile alike (Isaiah 53)

Yours faithfully,

Colin Maxwell
