LETTER SENT TO: IRISH TIMES
SUBJECT: ABSOLUTION
DATE SENT: 2-3-01

Dear Sir,

Rev Brian Stewart writes about "absolution" in the Anglican Church (Letters March 19) J.C. Ryle, one of the godliest Bishops Anglicanism ever produced, complained bitterly that there were those in his day who were "determined to twist the wording" of the Book of Common Prayer "into a sanction of the Romish doctrine of habitual confession and absolution." He pointed out that the Anglican Homily on Repentance contains a long passage most strongly condemning the auricular confession of the Church of Rome.

It would be helpful if Rev Stewart clarified the point further, bearing in mind the stoutly Protestant nature of the Articles of Religion to which he assented.

Yours faithfully,
Colin Maxwell.
