DATING A JEHOVAH WITNESS
WHEN ARMAGEDDON "WAS JUST AROUIND THE CORNER"
This page of Jehovah Witness dates is not intended to be exhaustive. (Click here and here for exhaustive lists) However, if basic, then at least it is basically helpful
to any who are seeking to witness to self styled Jehovah Witnesses. The
Jehovah Witnesses set a lot in store by the word of their organisation,
which they believe is the mouth of God to their souls. It may well
prove to be a useful tool in your evangelism to undermine the
authority of the Watchtower Organisation. The best way to do this is to
simply let the Watchtower Organisation speak for itself.
Before we look at our subject, please remember that prophecy is the key doctrine for the Jehovah Witness. He labours with the "Armageddon is just around the corner..." threat hanging over his head. Since his religion is built on works, as proved here, then he can never have assurance that he is among the "worthy ones."
Experience shows that the Jehovah Witness will resist any conversations
based on the thought that their organisation may be wrong. This is a
defence mechanism which needs to be overcome. One way of doing this is
to challenge them on their current practice of promoting the Watchtower
or the Awake! magazines and other Watchtower literature. Literally
millions of books, magazines and tracts are produced in many languages
every single week by the Watchtower Organisation and spread abroad by a
huge army of volunteers. Does this literature stand up to scrutiny? Is
it wrong to examine this literature and see if it is consistent with
itself? These arguments are water proof. How can the Jehovah's Witness
deny their validity?
At all times, any discussions along these lines need to be done very
kindly and without the least rancour on your part. Such an
investigation to a Jehovah Witness, who has perhaps many emotional ties
with the Organisation and its adherents, including the closest of
family ties, will prove to be very painful. You are robbing him of the
only way of salvation which he knows.
His little world will be crumbling around him. Be sure, that you
quickly follow up this exposure of his errors with the saving truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ which is able to save him to the very uttermost.
If it should be queried as to the worthof delving into the distant
past, then you may vindicate the practice from a more recent
publication:
1988 "You will find valuable information in the older publications." (Our Kingdom Ministry Jan 1988)
Let's proceed:
1) WE OUGHT TO BASE OUR BELIEF'S ON THE BIBLE ALONE:
This
is God's way. The Scriptures (Written word of God) are able to make us
wise unto salvation and make the man of God perfect (2 Timothy 3:15-17)
Therefore we do not need any other books or extra revelations.
Basically, at least in theory, the JW's agree with us here. In their
book, "Reasoning from the Scriptures" (p.199) they define themselves as: "The
world wide Christian society of people who actively bear witness
regarding Jehovah God and his purposes affecting mankind. They base
their belief's solely on the Bible."
2) GOD HAS APPOINTED TEACHERS TO TEACH HIS PEOPLE:
See Matthew 28:20/Ephesians 4:11/Hebrews 5:12 etc.,
It is also taught in parable form where we read that the faithful and wise servant a.k.a. "the faithful and discreet slave" (Matthew 24:45) was
appointed by the master to give the household domestic staff their food
in due time. The Watchtower Organisation claims to be the mouthpiece of
the faithful and discreet slave:
"We all
need help to understand the Bible, and we cannot find the Scriptural guidance we
need outside the "faithful and discreet slave" organization." (Watchtower 2/15/1981,
pages 19)
From what
has gone before, we get the impression that the JW use only the Bible
and that the Watchtower Organisation alone provides us with Scriptural
guidance. Is this the case?
3) WATCHTOWER CLAIMED THAT ITS WRITINGS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE SCRIPTURE CAME DIRECT FROM GOD:
Every teaching, from whatever group, advances what he believesto be the
correct interpretation of the Scripture. He will naturally seek to
vindicate his position from the word of God itself. Right from the
beginning of its existence, the Watchtower claimed that its contents
were not of human origin. Consider:
[a] Watchtower specifically denies that that the interpretation is of men:
1917 "In all his (Russell's)
warnings he claimed no originality. He said that he could never have written his
books himself. It all came from God, through the enlightenment of the Holy
Spirit." (Studies in the Scriptures, Vol. 7, p. 387.)
1928 "The writer does not give his
opinion. No human interpretation of scripture is advanced." (Reconciliation,
1928, p. 6)
1931 The Watchtower is not the
instrument of any man or set of any of men, nor is it published according to the
whims of men. No man's opinion is expressed in the Watchtower. (Watchtower, Nov.
1 1931 p. 327)
[b] Watchtower specifically claims that the interpretation comes from God through Christ to her:
1938 "Jehovah's word is not of
private human interpretation. He is his own interpreter. He causes light to be
shed one Scripture text by others elsewhere in the Bible bearing on the same
subject. He also brings to pass the fulfillment of Bible prophecies by definite
events and then he calls the attention of his witnesses to such fulfillments in
clarification of prophecy. he has appointed Christ Jesus the head of his visible
organization and his associate interpreter for the organization, an interpreter,
one among a thousand. (Job 33:23) So Jehovah's visible organization under Christ
is a channel for bringing the divine interpretation of his word to his devoted
people." (Watchtower, June 1, 1938, p. 169)
1942"Christ
Jesus has caused the understanding of the prophetic dramas and pictures
to be clear and set forth in the Watchtower publications." (WT Dec 15
1942 376)
1943 The Lord by Christ Jesus
interprets his prophecies to his witnesses. (Watchtower, Nov. 1, 1943 p. 293)
1944 His remnant of faithful
followers catch the glory light from the unfolding of the Holy Scriptures, which
were written for our day and which Jehovah's appointed interpreter Christ Jesus
explains to us. (Watchtower, May 1, 1944 p. 138)
[c] Watchtower claims that this instruction is given to God's people by and through the holy angels:
1933 "This is proof that the
interpretation of prophecy does not proceed from man, but that the Lord Jesus,
the chief one in Jehovah's organization, sends the necessary information to his
people by and through his holy angels." (Preparation; 1933; p. 28)
[d] Watchtower claims that as fast as she gets the information, she publishes it:
1952 Jehovah's witnesses themselves are not nor can they be interpreters of
prophecies. but as fast as the superior authorities Jehovah and Christ Jesus
reveal the interpretations through their provided channel that fast do God's
people publish them" (Watchtower, April 15, 1952, p. 253)
[e] Watchtower claims that the instruction received is to be obeyed:
1957 Let us now unmistakably
identify Jehovah's channel of communication for our day, that we may continue in
his favor. ... It is vital that we appreciate this fact and respond to the
directions of the "slave" as we would to the voice of God, because it is his
provision. (Watchtower; June 15, 1957; p. 370)
1964 "The brother went down to get
the mail before breakfast, and when we had breakfast he said, 'Brother Riemer, I
got a new Watchtower this morning, and do you know the first thing that Ma and I
do when we get that Tower? We kneel down before we take the wrapper off and ask
Jehovah to make us worthy to see what the message is that Jehovah has for us.
Now, before we take the wrapper off, will you kneel down and pray with us?' How
different that elective elder was from this humble couple who appreciated
Jehovah's organization" (Watchtower, Sept. 15, 1964, p 574)
4)
YET DESPITE ALL THIS, THE WATCHTOWER HAS CONSISTENTLY ADVANCED
PROPHECIES THAT ARE NOT ONLY AT ODDS WITH THE BIBLE, BUT ALSO WITH ITS
OWN SELF:
SOME FALSE WATCHTOWER PROPHECIES:
1914 ".. the
battle of the great day of God Almighty.. so great is our confidence in
the Word of God and in the light of present truth shining upon it, that
we could not have doubted its testimony whatever had been the
appearances. The date of the close of that 'battle' is definitely
marked in Scripture as October, 1914. It is already in progress, its
beginning dating from October, 1874." (ZWT Jan 15 1892 repr 1355)
1925 As we have
heretofore stated, the great jubilee cycle is due to begin in 1925. At
that time the earthly phase of the kingdom shall be recognized ....
Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old, particularly
those named by the Apostle in Hebrews 11, to the condition of human
perfection. (Millions Now Living Will Never Die P89-90)
1925 "There will
be no slip-up .. Abraham should enter upon the actual possession of his
promised inheritance in the year 1925 A.D." (WT Oct 15 1917 6157)
A WORD ABOUT 1975
Although the Watchtower Organisation did not actually say that Jesus Christ would be returning in 1975, yet they hinted very broadly indeed that such would be the case. Example:
The October 8, 1966 Awake! carried an article entitled "How Much Longer
Will It Be?" and under the subheading "6,000 Years Completed in
1975," it too reasoned that the millennium would be the last 1000 years
of a 7000-year rest day of God. Abandoning some of the caution shown previously,
it said on page 19-20:
Hence, the fact that we are nearing the end of the first 6,000 years of man's
existence is of great significance.
Does God's rest day parallel the time man has been on earth since his
creation? Apparently so. From the most reliable investigations of Bible
chronology, harmonizing with many accepted dates of secular history, we find
that Adam was created in the autumn of the year 4026 B.C.E. Sometime in that
year Eve could well have been created, directly after which God's rest day
commenced. In what year, then, would the first 6,000 years of man's existence
and also the first 6,000 years of God's rest day come to an end? The year 1975.
This is worthy of notice, particularly in view of the fact that the "last days"
began in 1914, and that the physical facts of our day in fulfillment of prophecy
mark this as the last generation of this wicked world. So we can expect the
immediate future to be filled with thrilling events for those who rest their
faith in God and his promises. It means that within relatively few years we will
witness the fulfillment of the remaining prophecies that have to do with the
"time of the end."
5)
THESE EXAMPLES LEAD US TO CONCLUDE THAT THE VERY AUTHORITARIAN CLAIMS
OF THE WATCHTOWER ARE UNTRUE AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE OF GOD:
SELF CONDEMNATION:
1930 "But it may be asked, how are we to know whether one is a true or false
prophet? If he is a true prophet his message will come to pass exactly as
prophesied. If he is a false prophet, his prophecy will fail to come to pass....
The difference between a true and a false prophet is that the one is speaking
the word of the Lord and the other is speaking his own dreams and guesses"
(The Watchtower, 15 May 1930, pp. 154, 155).
1968 "True, there have been those in times past who predicted an 'end'
to the world, even announcing a specific date. Yet nothing happened.
The 'end' did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying. Why?
What was missing? Missing from such people were God's truths and the
evidence that He was using and guiding them. {AWAKE! Oct 8 1968
p23)
1991 "A religion that teaches lies cannot be true."
{WT Dec 1 1991 7}
6) DESPITE ALL THESE THINGS, THE WATCHTOWER ASKS US TO DO SOMETHING WITH OUR SOULS:
1936 "... there is but one place
of safety, and that is to be in and to abide in the organization of Jehovah
God." (Riches; 1936; p. 101)
1983 "To receive everlasting life in the earthly Paradise we must identify that
organization and serve God as part of it" (15 February 1983, p. 12).
1984 "Faith in Jehovah, faith in those whom he is using as spokesmen, yes,
faith in his organization! As we 'go out' to Jehovah's service today, how
important it is that we exercise such faith!" (Watchtower July 1, 1984 p17)
7) SALVATION IS FOUND IN A PERSON...NOT IN A RELIGION OR IN AN ORGANISATION:
THE WAY OF SALVATION:
1) YOU NEED TO CONFESS THAT YOU ARE A SINNER BEFORE
GOD:
Jesus said: I came not to call the
righteous, but sinners to repentance. (Luke 5:32)
2) YOU NEED TO
RECOGNISE THAT YOU CANNOT SAVE YOURSELF:
Not
by works of righteousness which we have done (Titus 3:5)
3) YOU NEED
TO RECOGNISE THAT ONLY JESUS CHRIST CAN SAVE YOU:
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and
the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)
4) YOU
NEED TO REPENT AND BELIEVE AND SO RECEIVE THE BENEFIT OF CHRIST'S WORK ON THE
CROSS FOR YOURSELF:
For when we were yet
without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. (Romans
5:6)
Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke
13:5)
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be
saved, and thy house. (Acts 16:31)
5) THE EVIDENCE OF THESE STEPS WILL
BE SEEN IN A CHANGED AND HOLY LIFE SPENT WITH OTHER CHRISTIANS IN SERVING
GOD:
And they continued stedfastly in the
apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. (2
Corinthians 5:17)
*********
It is evident from these few notes
alone that the Watchtower Society is not what it claims to be. It has
constantly misled people for over 100 years, teaching as absolute truth
that which is obviously a lie. We have concentrated here on
prophecy…we might as easily have delved into other matters where
the "faithful and discreet slave" claiming Heaven's help said one thing
only to directly contradict it at a later date. Look at the current
edition of the Watchtower or Awake! Magazine. Today it is being peddled
as absolute truth. Let a Witness declare that he has his suspicions
about it and see what happens. This time next year or in ten years
time, some of its teaching could be denied. If so…it can be
denied now.
