READ: 2 SAMUEL 23:1-12 TEXT: v8 [ADINO - TYPE/CHRIST]

These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same [was] Adino the Eznite: he lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time.

(As already seen) Adino is a real, literal person.
He was a contemporary of David and is described as one of his mighty men.
He is grouped here with another two literal men.
All are given names and we consider them to be real, literal, historical figures.
One day, we will be able to speak to Adino in Heaven and we will be able to talk to him about these mighty deeds that he wrought in the Lord's great name.
He is a literal figure.
But (like any good man/OT) a lovely picture/type of the Lord Jesus.
Although we might be filled with admiration for Adino, yet we must say as we read of his exploits that a greater/Adino is here.
The spirit of Christ was in him (1 Peter 1:10)
Had He not be so, then Adino would scarcely have been mentioned, and if so, only by way of warning.
As the pious/Israel viewed this man in Israel, they might have discerned that a Greater than he was being set forth for our viewing and admiration.
4 ways which Adino typified/pictured Jesus Christ.

1) HE TYPIFIED CHRIST IN HIS NAME:

A/ Adino = "His ornament" i.e. one who reflects the beauty/God.
Although we view Adino as a military hero and probably envisage a towering massive frame of biceps/muscles etc., yet we really ought to think first of a graceful, godly man who reflected something of the beauty of Christ in his words/deeds.
Bart Brewer (converted RC chaplain) spoke of seeing tough US Marines attending Baptist services openly carrying their Bibles.

B/ If Adino could reflect the beauty/God as to enjoy a name like this…how much more: Lord Jesus?
Truly Christ was His ornament

[i] Adino was one shapen/iniquity and conceived in sin (Psalm 51:5)
This stained every thought/word/deed he ever produced
Every his most holy productions were thus stained/flawed
There were probably times when he was hard to live with!
The flesh pushed itself to the fore and every day, he would have had to cry to God:
Forgive us our sins as we forgive them etc.,
Even as a regenerated saint/God: Romans 7:24
By stark contrast…the Lord Jesus knew no natural birth
No Adamic nature polluting his soul. Virgin born Son/God

[ii] Adino revealed the beauty/God in the things he would have thought and said and did.
If not…no different to anyone else.
His presence fragranced the gatherings:
In the home/synagogue or temple/royal court/battle field
The beauty/Lord God shone through him. A diamond believer!
Not merely "a nice guy" - such as you might discover among even the unconverted
He is "His ornament" All flows from grace.
How much more the Lord Jesus! People were attracted to Him.
Common people heard him gladly. Multitudes attended him.
Hung on his every word. Mothers did not fear to bring their children.
The sick/sorrowing/most vulnerable sought him out.
People who needed most mercy/deepest help flocked to him
Everything about Christ radiated the beauty/God

[iii] God publicly declares Adino to be a good man
This record/proof. Millions have studied brief/record of his life
How much more the Lord Jesus?
Again/again voice from Heaven publicly testified:
This is beloved son in whom I am well pleased
C/ Again…any beauty seen in Adino flows from the spirit/Christ in Him.
People ought to see Christ in us. We are to reflect Him.

2) HE TYPIFIED CHRIST IN HIS WISDOM:
A/ His description: the "Tachmonite" = "Thou wilt make me wise"
Brains and brawn are not always found together! Adino had both.
People looked to Adino for wisdom/direction
He made decisions/battle that ultimately elevated him to his great position.
No cronyism here. Wasn't a "friend of Daves" in that most obnoxious way of getting recognition and power.
He climbed through the ranks  because more/more people looked to him for help on those decisions that had to be made.
He made decisions which proved to be the right ones and so, coupled with his bravery/fighting skills, he arrived into the top 3.

B/ We remember that his wisdom was God given.
Of course, the world can produce its military genius's who used their brains to conquer/enslave men and promote their own glory.
Adino's wisdom was from above and was stamped with godliness

C/ Yet Adino's wisdom was nothing compared to that of Christ.
In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:3)
He is called the Wisdom/God (1 Corinthians 1:24)

[i] Christ as God knew all things as seen by Peter (John 21:17)
He knew what was in the deep, wicked, hidden recesses of men's hearts (Matthew 9:4) Searches the heart (Revelation 2:23)
He could spot insincerity a mile way: Matt 8:19-22/Lk 18:18-24
Everything He did was stamped with the greatest wisdom
Never say: He got it wrong here/there! No mistakes.

[ii] Christ, as man, grew in wisdom (Luke 2:52)
One/mysteries of what was entailed in Incarnate Deity - the union of His two natures (Divine/Human) in one person forever
We must accept rather than explain
I think it is foretold in this type: Thou wilt make me wise
Evidently there were things which Christ, as man, had still to attain to in knowledge.
'Tis mystery all!

D/ Suffice for us to know: Christ is made unto the wisdom/God unto us (1 Corinthians 1:30)
In any perplexing situation, we can look to Christ to guide us.
Doubtless folk sought out Adino's help.
Perhaps his wisdom was often stumped.
None who ever truly seek Christ for His help will be left/dark.

3) HE TYPIFIED CHRIST IN HIS OFFICE AND POSITION:

A/ We find Adino sitting in the seat, chief among the captains
Occupies no mean position. First mentioned among the First Three
He was worthy of the greatest respect.

B/ How much more the Lord Jesus?
[i] Specifically called the Captain of our salvation (Hebrews 2:10)
Elsewhere:  Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. (Isaiah 55:4)
We willingly follow the Lord Jesus even into battle
We do so now in this life and on this earth: 1 Timothy 6:12
Bible abounds with all kinds of military references: Armour etc.,
We will do so in a future date when we will return to earth with Him (Revelation 19) and take just vengeance upon wicked sinners

[ii] The Lord Jesus truly sits as chief among the captains
As God He rules supreme in Heaven and in Earth
All others do His bidding: Psalm 103:20
Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
He is the One who has all the Pre-eminence (Colossians 1:18)
Every knee will one day bow to Him and confess Him as Lord (Philippians 2:11)
The public confession may be yet future…but the reality of its truth is now: He is Lord of all (Acts 10:36)

4) HE TYPIFIED CHRIST IN HIS VICTORY:
A/ Adino wrought a great victory. 800 fell in one battle/one time when he lifted up his spear against them
A spear isn't very much is it? But it brought success.

B/ Consider Christ who entered into battle for us
Not against mere flesh and blood but against sin/wickedness

[i] In His righteous life when He confronted the hosts/darkness daily, but esp. when He went 40 days/40 nights: wilderness
Was not this a great victory?
And when he silenced 3 fold attack upon Him (Matt 22) leaving His enemies in complete disarray?

[ii] But esp. in His atoning death/Calvary.
Note how the type protects the truth.
One particular victory is mentioned.
Christ died once and for all. Trust Him.
Appeal.
