THE MERCY OF A BROKEN CRUCIFIX
ENABLING ITS OWNER TO TRUST TO THE GREAT GOD OF HEAVEN

In his Journal dated 5th July, 1790, John Wesley tells us of a poor Irish woman who went to her priest in great distress of mind exclaiming:

"Oh sir, what shall I do? I have broken my china crucifix and now I have nothing to trust to but the great God of Heaven!"

John Wesley commented: "What a great blessing that she had nothing to trust to but the great God of Heaven."

Anything or anyone that stands between us and singular trust in the "Great God of Heaven" does us more harm than good. There is only one mediator between God and men and that is the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5) No one else is appointed to bring us to God and so it is vain for us to pray to this one or to that one as if they were entrusted by God for the great task. These are true words, borne out by even a cursory reading of the word of God. It is not for us to invent ways to come to God or to simply believe all that we have been told. If we have no Scriptural warrant for what we do, then we cannot expect God to accept it.  With all due respects to Mary and "the saints" we have absolutely no warrant to pray to or through them. Don't let the issue be clouded any. This is a personal, individual matter between your soul and God and Jesus Christ and Him alone is the One who alone brings us to the Father .

Jesus said:"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me"  (John 14:6 RC Douay Version)
To cast yourself solely upon the mercy of God will bring certain salvation to your soul. JESUS CHRIST HAS DONE ALL THAT IS NECESSARY TO SAVE YOU. On the Cross, Jesus cried "IT IS FINISHED" (John 19:30) and so there is nothing that needs to be added to His perfect work. No prayers - no penances - no fastings etc., it is not what you do for God that saves, but rather what God in Christ has done for you. The poor, discouraged tax collector in the temple cast himself solely upon the mercy of God when he cried out, "God be merciful to me a sinner" (Luke 18:13)  and the Bible assures us that he"went down into his house justified" (Luke 18:10-14 RC Douay Version) Christ's sacrifice for sins was once and for all. he sat down at the right hand of God because He had finished the work that the Father gave Him to do. To say that your prayers and fastings etc., are needed to supplement His work is to deny its perfection. Religion is man seeking God. The Gospel (by contrast) is God seeking Man and doing for man what man cannot do or contribute towards himself.
Salvation is a free gift, obtainable by calling upon the name of the Lord (Romans 10:13) It is "without money and without any price" (Isaiah 55:1 RC Douay Version )  it is yours if you will but call upon the name of the Lord in repentance and in faith. Why not you? Why not now?
